West Wilson Community Arts Alliance Announces Community Meeting for Planning a Fine Arts Wing of the YMCA
The Board of Directors of the The West Wilson Community Arts Alliance (The Arts Alliance & WWCAA) has approved a Fine Arts Center Wing Planning Project to investigate the needs and feasibility of an Arts facility within the proposed Mt. Juliet YMCA building. Fine Arts is defined as Music, Theatre and all Art. They have also set up a needs analysis meeting at 7:00pm Wednesday, May 28 at Executive Title, 4470 Old Lebanon Dirt Rd (across from Wilson Bank and Trust) to determine what should be done.
Katharine Ray, Executive Director of the Arts Alliance went on to explain that, “This is an exciting time for the Fine Arts in West Wilson County. Right now facilities and venues for the arts in our area are very limited. The Arts Alliance has approached the YMCA and the response has been favorable towards creating space in the proposed new facility. We conceive of rooms that can be used for arts and music education taught by local arts educators, a 200+ seat theatre that can be used by performing arts groups for local productions and we also see added business uses of the theatre for conferences and business meetings, and an art gallery/gift shop of local arts, music and crafts work.”
The thought process for this venture began when the YMCA announced that the building will contain multi-purpose rooms for use by Seniors, Youth and the community for educational purposes, meetings and banquets of up to 200 people.
Gary Rabideau, Chairman of the Arts Alliance explained, “Our thought process basically surrounded around the idea that our arts groups needed to voice their needs in the community space, like should the Y include a kiln and adequate ventilation for throwing pottery in the new space and include a stage in the banquet hall. Then we began to think a little bigger since the Arts Alliance would be charged with coming up the capital for these projects and the concept of specialized arts rooms, an actual theatre and an art gallery/gift shop came into focus. The savings and synergies here are tremendous – nearly every citizen will come to the arts facility to take a ballroom dancing class, learn to watercolor, see a stage production involving a neighbor, son, daughter, or celebrity and buy local arts and crafts – this will be a place to connect to the community. He went on the add that, part of the beauty of this opportunity is that the Y will operate and maintain the facility with existing staff, parking is already planned for and peak usage will come at offsetting times, the city is donating the land and this is a huge community attraction, the location is terrific and will support downtown cafes and also support town center style businesses. This is a truly Win – Win project. We are anticipating a $2.5 million Arts Wing capital requirement to accomplish our goal of providing community accessible arts space right here in Mt. Juliet”.
The Arts Alliance was created to bring increased awareness of all artistic expression to our area. Currently, there are 4 organizations that have been created: Encore Theatre Company, Choral Dynamics, The Fine Arts Group and The Jazz Ensemble. They are working to add a Community Concert Band in January 2008.
